During activation of T cells by antigen-presenting cells (APZ), a complex structure is formed at the contact zone. Analogous to neuronal synapses, this structure has been termed a mature "immunological synapse" (IS). It consists of an inner activation area, cSMAC (central supramolecular activation cluster).
