CCL11 is a small cytokine from the CC chemokine family, also known as eotaxin-1. CCL11 is a protein encoded by a gene located on chromosome 17. The effect of CCL11 is achieved by binding to the G-protein coupled chemokine receptor CCR2. CCL11 is also a ligand (like CCL24 and -26) for the receptors CCR3 and CCR5.

CL11 is involved in acute and chronic (eosinophilic) inflammatory processes. The chemokine is also expressed by tumors (usually combined with accumulations of eosinophil granulocytes du mast cells in the tissue). CCL11 is a selective chemoattractant for eosinophilic granulocytes, and to this extent may be involved in eosinophil-mediated inflammatory reactions.
CCL11 is a useful biomarker for diagnosis and severity of bronchial asthma. The cytokine can be determined from blood and sputum. Furthermore, CCL2 and CCL11 were elevated in children with food allergy.
Remarkably, individuals with chronic cannabis use showed significantly elevated blood levels of CCL11.
In idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (N13.5), a rare possibly IgG4-associated autoimmune disease, CCL11 is expressed in infiltrating mononuclear cells, the chemokine receptor CCR3 was expressed by eosinophilic granulocytes, mast cells, lymphocytes and mast cells.
Studies on leiomyomas showed increased expression of CCL5 and CCL11 by tumor cells. Chemokine expression was coupled with a significant increase of mast cells in the tissue.
