Brazil nut trees are trees up to 50 meters high. The distribution area is in the rainforests of South America. The seeds of the Brazil nut trees are known as Brazil nut or also as Amazon almond or Amazon chestnut (Portuguese: Castanha-do-brasil or Castanha-do-pará), named after the Brazilian state of Pará. The nuts are nutritionally valuable; they contain 60-70% oil and 17% protein and are considered a delicacy worldwide.

The allergological relevance is low. Sensitization is usually against the major allergen Ber e 1 (9 kDa). In contrast, patients sensitised to one of the minor allergens rarely show clinical symptoms. Severe allergic reactions have only been described sporadically. Oral allergy syndrome is not uncommon. Some of those allergic to Brazil nuts are intolerant to other nuts, including peanuts. There is also a cross-reaction (cross-allergy) to birch pollen.
