Name for a potentially allergenic substance. An allergen is basically also an antigen, i.e. a substance that is able to induce an immune response. Like antigens, allergens have no chemical similarities. Most allergens are (naturally occurring) proteins or protein compounds.
The immune system of allergic patients reacts to contact with an allergen by producing IgE antibodies.
"Pseudoallergens" (see intolerance reaction below) are substances in which the immune system is not involved, but mediators such as histamines are.
